Adult's Play

The second part of the "Playing to Grow: A Two-Part Series on Nurturing the Basic Drive to Play"

__________

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; We grow old because we stop playing.” - George Bernard Shaw

We’re living in a time that’s more conducive to anxiety than playfulness. Yet play may be what’s needed to help alleviate our stress and restore balance and connectivity. But what is adult play and what may get in our way? This discussion encompasses many possible types of adult play, including how drama is seen as the play of adults.

This is a free, in-person event. If you would like to request CEUs for your attendance, you may pay $30 upon registration.

Meet the Discussion Leaders

Patricia Hugenberger, Psya.D. is on the BGSP faculty and is the Director of the Department of Continuing Education. She has a long-standing interest in the value of play for children and adults and is particularly interested in how drama and literature are adult forms of play. Her research focuses on this topic.

Eugene Goldwater, M.D., Cert. Psya. is on the faculty of BGSP and has over forty years of clinical and teaching experience. He has lectured and written about a wide variety of subjects, including fantasy and creativity. His many avocational interests (as a dancer, singer, band leader, and artist) are infused with a love of play, and he is also interested in the emotional importance of play throughout the life span.

OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss and list three types of adult play and how they may affect the adult psyche.
  2. Compare and contrast the value of various types of play.
  3. Discuss how theories of play can be applied to clinical practice.
